Gerd Keiser is the founder and president of
PhotonicsComm Solutions, Inc., a firm specializing
in consulting and education for the optical communications industry. He has
more than 25 years experience in optical fiber telecommunications and local
area networks, and is known worldwide for his popular textbooks in these
fields. His activities in these areas earned him GTE's prestigious Leslie
Warner Award and the honor of becoming an IEEE Fellow. He received his BA and
MS degrees in mathematics and physics from the University of Wisconsin and a
Ph.D. in solid state physics from Northeastern University. In addition to his
native English, Gerd is fluent in German and conversant in French and Chinese
(Mandarin).

Inc as a consultant, educator, and
author. As a consultant

As an educator Gerd has
had a long involvement in teaching students and professionals. While working in
the telecommunications industry, he served as an adjunct professor of
electrical engineering at Northeastern University and Tufts University, and was
an industrial advisor for developing fiber optic courses at the Wentworth
Institute of Technology. At PhotonicsComm Solutions, Inc he has given
customized in-house courses at companies and tutorial short courses at
conferences. This has included travel to Australia, Israel, South East Asia,
and throughout the USA.

As an author Gerd has
written numerous articles on optical communications and ATM switching. In
addition, he is the author of two popular textbooks on optical fiber
communications and local area networks, McGraw-Hill published both of these
books, each of which has undergone several revisions in order to ensure that
the latest technology is presented. The Publications page gives more details on these
